80 YEARS OF MARIE HJORTH
Celebrating Marie Hjorth – 80 Years of Ceramic Craft
At Hjorths Fabrik, you can currently experience a small exhibition celebrating Marie Hjorth’s 80th birthday and looking back on her beautiful and functional contributions to the factory.
As a ceramicist, Marie Hjorth remained faithful to tradition while also managing to leave a deeply personal mark on the production. This is evident in her exploration of clay’s potential, her one-of-a-kind stoneware, and her curiosity for decorative techniques.
Marie Hjorth made her debut at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition in 1963 and graduated the following year from the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. She and her sister Ulla represented the fourth generation at the factory, and their return in the 1960s marked a new era. Together, they brought a fresh materiality to the production – through new glazes and clay bodies enhanced with chamotte.

MARIE’S CAREER
Since graduating from the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, Marie Hjorth has spent most of her professional life at Hjorths Fabrik. From 1982 to 1993, she ran the factory together with her sister Ulla.
Throughout her career, Marie has exhibited her work at several renowned institutions, including the Museums of Decorative Arts in Oslo and Hamburg, Trapholt Museum of Modern Art and Design, the Museum of Art in Philadelphia, and Bornholm Art Museum.
Her public artworks can also be seen around the town of Rønne – at Lunden Nursing Home, Bornholm Business School, Bornholm Hospital, and on the gable of the Pakhuset building on Nellikegade.
To this day, Marie still occasionally creates her own ceramics – and of course, it happens right here at Hjorths Fabrik.
With this exhibition, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Marie Hjorth on her 80th birthday.
Practical info: The exhibition is on view through Christmas 2021.
