Mustard & Cannon balls

At Erichsens Gård and Gaarden you can experience how you make handmade mustard - or rather 'leg'made

Back in the days it was very common to make homemade mustard on Bornholm. The women from Bornholm used a big platter made of tree or clay and a cannon ball. The platter was placed in the lap and all the dry ingredients are mixed in the platter. The women grinded the seeds by making the cannon ball roll around in the platter with small movements with their legs.

The mustard seeds are grinded and gradually the liquids are added. When the ball has rolled around in the platter for a little while, you can start feeling the mustard tickle your nose.

Mustard recipe
3 tbs. yellow mustard seeds
3 tbs. black mustard
6 tbs. water
6 tbs. vinegar
4-5 tbs. brown sugar (or honey)
1 tsp. salt

In the Skafferiet at Gaarden, you can see a platter made of clay with a 4kg. cannon ball.
The cannon ball the women at the museums are using weight approx. 6kg.
